I'm Alex

I live in Cheshire, England.
I'm lazy. I like eating, sleeping and wasting time.

I'm an artist, I'm incredibly messy and unorganised.
You think I'm exaggerating but to be honest I did spend thirty minutes today trying to get paint stains out of my carpet.

I'm 17, but I have an inexplicable attraction towards punk. Unsurprisingly nobody takes me seriously ;3

I like...

Green Day ♦ The Ramones ♦ Rancid ♦ The Offspring ♦ Owl City ♦ Fun ♦ The Lion King ♦ My Little Pony ♦ Back to the Future ♦ School of Rock ♦ Friends ♦ Hetalia ♦ Animal Crossing ♦
Interests
A lot of you know that I've wanted to be an animator for most of my life, and that I was particularly interested in learning traditional 2D animation.

A few weeks ago, John Lasseter decided to let all of his 2D animators go. A lot of people who see Disney/Pixar as the be all and end all of the industry are saying that this effectively marks the end of traditional animation as an art form as it doesn't generate enough mainstream interest.

I have some pretty mixed feelings about this. Most importantly it means that Calarts has been surpassed by a lot of other colleges whose courses have been established more recently and focus almost entirely around 3D animation. I'm not sure what impact this has on Calarts, whether they'll tailor their course to be more suited to the industry as it evolves or whether they'll continue to teach a mixture of both types.

Personally, I feel that 2D will have an opportunity to make a comeback in perhaps five to ten years if people are still being suitably trained for it.
Disney's success comes and goes in waves. For instance, they started out by making very good quality full length features (With the Nine Old Men and Walt himself), then they stepped back a little and released films which were compliations of animated shorts which weren't as well recieved. Then came the second golden age (with animators like Glen Keane and Andreas Deja) and then they lost it again and started pumping out as many cheaply made sequels as they could. The rest of the industry was failing too, starting to adapt to 3D technology and using it as an excuse for bad storytelling, consequently saved by Pixar who admittedly made a lot of amazing films, particularly the ones they've put out since the merger. But logically its time for something to change again. Since the success of Tangled and Brave, they've started putting out sequels again (Not that I'm complaining. Finding Dory looks amazing). But it suggests that they've almost exausted their third bout of success.

Considering Disney/Pixars phenomenal amount of influence over most other mainstream animation studios, whatever John Lasseter decides to do next will have a massive impact on animation in future years. I think that because Calarts still has such strong ties with Disney, they'll base their decisions about adapting their Character Animation course based on John Lasseters decisions over the coming years. It could potentially make Calarts a harder or easier school to get into, so I'm definitely keeping an eye out.

If Calarts do continue to train 2D animators, then they'll probably see a gap in the market in about a decades time.
Feel free to share your thoughts ^^; there's probably some huge factor that I've missed out.
